As one of the biggest charity donors in the world, how does the HKJC reward the society?
A unique feature of the Club, much admired worldwide, is its not-for-profit business model whereby its surplus goes to charity. Over the past decade, the Club has donated an average of one billion Hong Kong dollars every year to hundreds of charities and community projects. Today, the Club ranks alongside organisations such as the Rockefeller Foundation as one of the biggest charity donors in the world.
The Club is the largest single taxpayer in Hong Kong, contributing some HK$13 billion a year to public revenue through direct and indirect taxes. The Club contributes on average HK$16.3 billion a year to the Hong Kong economy or 1.3% of Hong Kong’s GDP. Its contribution to the GDP is over half that of the restaurant and hotel industry and about two-thirds that of the communications industry.
The Club employs nearly 25,000 full- and part-time staff, making it one of the ten largest non-government employers in Hong Kong. Club part-time employees are estimated to account for around 11% of all part-time staff in Hong Kong.
